Title: Microneedles for monitoring Interstitial fluid physiology

Abstract: Microneedle arrays as tools for minimally invasive transdermal drug and vaccine delivery were introduced in 1990s and have played a vital role in expanding the number of drugs that can be delivered transdermally. Over the last decade, Microneedle arrays have become popular for their diagnostic prowess in the skin interstitial fluid (ISF). In this seminar, I will present my case on employing microneedles for monitoring interstitial fluid physiology citing two examples of clinical studies where I have been involved. In the first example, I will demonstrate how these microneedle arrays can be as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices matching performance similar to currently available commercial CGM devices. In the second example, I will show how the microneedle arrays could be used to monitor levels of antimicrobials in the skin ISF thus allowing precision drug delivery in a closed loop format.
