In this event, Hellen Hornby will share her work on The Tyne Estuary Partnership.
The River Tyne is an important wildlife corridor and one of the best Atlantic salmon rivers in England, with otters and pearl mussels recorded in the upper catchment.
The Tyne Estuary Partnership is a strategic and influential partnership invested in the long-term environmental and economic enhancement of the estuary, making a meaningful and sustainable impact.
There is a considerable amount of growth on the banks of the Tyne and a huge opportunity to maximise the positive impact developments can have on this area and its environment.
The Tyne Estuary Partnership is helping to deliver the shared vision of protecting the water environment in the northeast. Partners include Northumbrian Water, the Environment Agency, several local authorities, developers and engineering consultants from the region.
The project is focussed on utilising Nature Based Solutions (NBS) to provide ecological and biodiversity enhancements which will create a habitat corridor, increase biodiversity connectivity, offset historical habitat losses, support water quality improvement and the overall ecology, thus meeting Water Framework Directive (WFD) objectives.
It is an opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative design, to demonstrate what can be achieved when we collaborate to improve the area in which we live and work.
In 2019, Groundworks were asked to scope out the feasibility of implementing intervention measures at a number of priority sites. Site specific outline designs were commissioned from specialist companies, 2 or more pilot schemes are due to be implemented in 2020/21.
