In this session we'll explore the chemistry of some well known sweets, as well as showing you how to make your own sherbet at home. We'll also explore the properties of some common plastics and will show you some easy experiments you can perform yourself to change the properties of a material.
This event is organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry Mid-Southern Counties Local Section and will run online and is intended as a replacement for our annual family lecture, which we were unable to run in January 2021 due to current circumstances.
The session will be hosted by Prof David Read from the University of Southampton and will be led by Solomon Phillips, a Master's student at the University, and Tom Pearson, a local teacher who is also a member of the local section committee.
In order to participate in the practical component of the session, parents will need to buy a few low cost items, the details of which will be sent out after registration. Parents will also be required to review the risk assessment and confirm that they will supervise their children should they wish to undertake the practical activity.
