This short presentation will focus on the following points. The talk itself will last under 30 minutes, leaving time afterwards for questions and discussion.
- The geological origins of sands are explored;
- Their crystalline structures are illustrated by observing crystals under polarised light;
- Different chalks and limestones are considered; and
- How these are processed into different grades of limes;
- Finally mention is made of Portland Cement manufacture.
The session will be delivered by Roger Kevern from the Mid-Southern Counties Local Section committee. Roger is a retired scientist whose main career was in health and safety management but his original degrees were in Colour Chemistry. In his retirement he has taken over a grade II listed cottage in the Isle of Wight. He has combined his knowledge of chemistry with the need to maintain a listed building using lime plasters and mortars.
