Elements - A short story competition

25 January - 4 April 2022, United Kingdom

Introduction
There have been many notable writers, both chemists and non-chemists alike, who have written stories inspired by chemistry. These stories have described the fascinating history of how a molecule was discovered or the life of a great chemist. In other stories, chemistry has been the originality behind a fictional telling of events or relationships.

[For notable examples see: Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table (https://www.matscienceconference.com/experts); In Your Element by Nature Chemistry (https://www.nature.com/nchem/articles?type=in-your-element) Hugh Aldersey-Williams’ Periodic Tales: A Cultural History of the Elements, from Arsenic to Zinc (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_Tales).]

The Chilterns & Middlesex Local Section of the RSC is running a friendly competition to engage the next generation of chemistry writers. To create a strong chemistry link we are using the Periodic Table as our source of creativity for the short stories.

Short Stories for the competition:
Send in a story stating the element of inspiration (the element does not need to be in the title, but, if not, then please state it separately.) The story can be fiction or non-fiction, including, but not limited to: Essays, historical accounts, biographies, historical fiction, science fiction and fantasy or crime and mysteries. The story cannot be graphical or a comic, we will only be considering prose with no illustrations, diagrams, or pictures. The story can be as short as you wish but should be a maximum length of 500 words.

Prizes:
There will be prizes for the best three short stories, with the overall winner receiving book vouchers worth £50. The runners up will receive vouchers of £25 and £10, respectively. In addition, the top three stories will be published on the Royal Society of Chemistry website.
