11.30 State of Battery Recycling – Dr Athan Fox (Ever Resource Ltd)
The lead-acid battery was invented in the 1850s, before the commercial distribution of electric power which started in 1882. How did a product invented in the 19th Century, before global warming and recycling had entered the mainstream, become the world’s most successfully recycled commodity item? What will it take for the emerging lithium-ion battery recyclers to replicate the success of lead-acid? In this seminar we will discuss the success story of lead-acid battery recycling; the reasons this industry is polluting despite its impressive recycling rates; and what it would take for lithium-ion battery recycling to emulate its success.
Dr Fox is CEO of Ever Resource Ltd and is a PhD graduate in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge. He develops, scales up and commercialises technology to address the world’s challenges in sustainability, recycling and the circular economy.

Florence Miremadi-Nafici began her career as an Electrical Engineer in the Power Transmission Industry. She is now CEO of NAFICI Environmental Research. She developed a patented method for processing straw with low energy and low water consumption as an alternative to wood pulp.
Tony Eley has over 30 years of experience of working in the pulp and paper industry. He has worked with a number of leading global suppliers to develop innovative solutions to overcome technical disparities between suppliers and end users.
