A guided tour of The Apothecaries` Hall, Black Friars Lane, London EC4V 6ER followed by lunch at the nearby “Glean” restaurant. The Hall, the headquarters of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, is a scheduled monument, it is also the oldest extant livery company hall by virtue of the fact that it was the first one to be rebuilt in 1671, following the fire of London. The Society`s first Hall, acquired in 1632 and burnt down in 1666, was the former guest house of the Dominican Priory of Black Friars. The furnishings of the Hall include impressive carved wood, numerous life size portraits and some very fine stained glass.
There is also a very interesting enclosed courtyard.
The Society can trace its origins back to the twelve century societies of Pepperers & Spicers which in turn became amalgamated with the Grocers Guild. In the early 17th century the Apothecaries separated from the Grocers and set up their own guild. The Apothecaries were originally chemists, mixing and selling their own medicines from a laboratory and shop in their Black Friars Lane premises until the early years of the 20th century. The shop has recently been recreated exactly as it was when it closed in 1922.
This event will not be subsidised by C&M Section RSC and is therefore open to RSC members from other SE sections. Cost is £50 per head (£15 hall fee, £35 lunch). Cheques payable to C&M Section RSC please.
