Application of Science to the Study and Conservation of Paintings

Introduction
Aviva Burnstock is a Professor in the Department of Art Conservation at The Courtauld Institute.  She has appeared as a scientific expert in the BBC’s Fake or Fortune programme.  This talk will introduce some of the ways science has been applied to study paintings, with a focus on the materials and techniques used by artists. Case studies will highlight how technical imaging and material analysis can reveal important information about the artist’s techniques and the condition of paintings that is vital for their conservation.
