Dr Rick Tynan was a biology and science teacher in Merseyside secondary schools for 27 years and has worked at Liverpool Jonh Moores University as a teacher educator for 18 years. He is also a third-generation magical entertainer whose grandparents and parents were full-time professional entertainers in music hall, variety theatres, clubs and holiday complexes.
The Alchemy lecture combines magic effects and science education and has been developed over time from material used with primary and secondary school learners and pre-service science teachers. This lecture will be interactive and focus on the scientific explanations for magic effects and stunts that are already in the public domain, because most can be found in secondary school textbooks. As well as demonstrating some magic effects that anyone can do, the chemistry of ‘flash’ products will be discussed and the collaboration between science and magic in order to do rigorous research into the paranormal will be briefly considered
No prerequisite knowledge of chemistry or science is required to attend, only the enthusiasm to learn! Drinks and networking reception to follow afterwards.
Free event but pre-booking required
