Preparing to Introduce the New KS3 Curriculum

18 January 2008, Birmingham, United Kingdom

Introduction
The new KS3 programme of study is focussed towards developing scientific thinking and processes. There are only four paragraphs of specified content. The content being what teachers draw upon when teaching the key concepts (thinking, applications and implications, cultural understanding and collaboration) and when teaching the key processes (practical skills, critical understanding, and communication). This new approach may be seen as radical by teachers familiar with a content driven curriculum

Main Changes:
We examine how the new POS relates to the current programme of study and identify what the main changes are in terms of methodology, content and assessment.

Implications and Strategies:
The workshop focuses on the implications for teaching the new KS3 science and examines strategies for teaching the key processes and concepts. In addition we look at how departments can integrate the specified curriculum opportunities such as careers, contemporary and historical developments.
