RSC Chemistry Lecture - The Christmas Flash Bang Show

12 December 2012, Manchester, United Kingdom

Introduction
It does exactly what it says on the (exploding syrup) tin: Rapid colour changes, clock reactions, explosions, flame colours, Barking Dogs, gun cotton, sellotape bombs, indoor fireworks, hydrogen rockets, starting fires with water, burning things in CO2, chemiluminescence (phosphorus globe), liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen: many of the classics and a few newer chemical demonstrations are showcased. The emphasis is on instilling a sense of excitement and wonder, but the fast-paced demonstrations are linked with a commentary that delivers useful illustration of a range of points of syllabus, on solids, liquids, gases, combustion, respiration, periodicity, dependence of rate upon state of division etc. Dr Mair has given hundreds of these lectures throughout the North West and beyond, and so he knows how to pitch his demos for maximum relevance to curriculum without compromising the entertainment on offer.
