A titration is an analytical experimental technique used to determine the unknown concentration of a known solute. The unknown concentration is measured by reaction with a solution of known concentration. Performing titrations can be an enormously challenging activity for students, from the many practical manipulations involved to data handling and subsequent calculations.
After working through this topic you will be able to:
- explain the key principles of titrations and good experimental technique
- consider students' difficulties and explore how to address or pre-empt these problems
- evaluate the use of simulations in the classroom for both experimental technique and calculations from experimental data.
