There are many colourful demonstrations or experiments that you might use in a lesson on acids and alkalis.  The following experiment, the extraction of an indicator from red cabbage, is easy to carry out from readily available materials and it provides students with the opportunity for 'hands on' exploration by testing their indicator. They can test a varied selection of everyday household substances, make observations and determine whether a substance is an acid or an alkali.
