Introduction

Measuring the temperature change of a neutralisation reaction is a useful illustration of the fundamental process of neutralisation. Students will see that the reaction gives out heat energy as the net result of bonds breaking and new bonds forming. This can be helpful in addressing some pre-existing notions about neutralisation as 'removing acid properties', and instead, appreciating the underlying chemistry.
This activity can also provide a useful context for students to practise drawing graphs, and to interpret and extrapolate experimental data.
