Making salts – which salt, which reaction?
[INSERT MS_CI_05_ima]
Think about the names of the following salts and what they tell you about their make-up. How could each of the following salts be made? Think about the possible combinations of reagents before clicking to reveal and check your answers.
Sodium sulfate could be prepared from ...?
sodium hydroxide and sulfuric acid,
sodium carbonate and sulfuric acid,
or sodium and sulfuric acid (although in practice the reaction would be too vigorous).
Copper chloride could be prepared from ...?
copper carbonate and hydrochloric acid,
or copper oxide and hydrochloric acid
(recall that copper metal doesn't react with most acids as it's below hydrogen in the reactivity series)
Calcium nitrate could be prepared from ...?
calcium hydroxide and nitric acid,
calcium carbonate and nitric acid,
or calcium and nitric acid
