There are many wonderfully colourful demonstrations and experiments that you might use in a lesson about indicators. The following practical investigation encourages students to develop their understanding of universal indicators and single indicators by mixing combinations of two single indicators and observing the colours at various pHs. The challenge for students is to come up with a combination of indicators with a pH range similar to universal indicator (eg pH 4–11).
