WorldSkills success for first chemist to compete
Tonicha Roberts – the first person without a degree to become a Reporting Scientist at testing laboratories company Eurofins – has brought home a medal from the prestigious WorldSkills competition, which was held this year in Russia.
Tonicha is a Forensic Reporting Scientist at Eurofins (formerly known as LGC), where she graduated as an apprentice in 2017. Earlier this year she entered the very first Laboratory Technician stream of the prestigious WorldSkills competition, and was selected for the international finals in Kazan in Russia.
The WorldSkills competition, sometimes described as the "industry-based Olympics", which takes place every two years, is considered to be the ultimate litmus test to compare countries’ readiness to compete economically.
The competition celebrates the importance of skilled trades, from hairdressing and butchery to technology and graphic design. This year’s Team UK – made up of the UK’s top young students, apprentices, and former apprentices – included 37 women and men and came home with a total of 19 medals, testament to the remarkable breadth and depth of skills that the UK offers the world.
More than a quarter of a million people gathered in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan for the spectacular closing ceremony which was addressed by President Vladimir Putin.
Tonicha won a Medallion of Excellence, which means she is of 'World class standard'.
