About this prize

The Alan Tetlow Memorial Award aims to help encourage early career chemists (during the first 10 years of their career) and those returning to work after a career break to develop their professional careers. Awards of up to £2,000 per year are available.

To advance their careers, members can apply for financial assistance for the following activities:

  • attending conferences to present a poster or paper
  • attending research meetings (including young researcher meetings)
  • visiting UK or international laboratories
  • completing training courses
  • assisting in research relating to water science projects in general

Please note that activities are not restricted to those above only. However, the activity needs to contain a high proportion of water related chemical science which contributes to water sustainability (environment, economic, social) and have an identifiable practical application.

The value of each award will be not more than 50% of the agreed cost and will be awarded subject to satisfactory receipts. Please note 25% of any award will be withheld pending satisfactory completion of a report or article for the Newsletter and/or presentation to a Committee Meeting.

Please refer to the specific eligibility criteria and fundable activities in the application form.

Submit a completed application form by email.

Applications will only be accepted from 1 January to 30 April.

Each application is reviewed by the Water Science Forum Committee Awards Sub-Group.

All requests for financial support are considered on their merits. Therefore, it is vital that the application form contains sufficient detail for the Committee to make an informed assessment on the degree of water related chemical science involved. The applicant also needs to identify how their project is likely to further the Water Science Forum’s aims and objectives. The committee's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The Secretary will notify applicants of the outcome of their applications in early July.

John Alan Tetlow, who died aged 70 in February 2005, was one of the founder members of the RSC Water Chemistry Forum (now the Water Science Forum). Alan retired as a Regional Manager in the then National Rivers Authority and devoted many years to improving the quality of the water environment in England and Wales. Most importantly he helped to raise the profile of the water chemist within the RSC and the water industry. The Alan Tetlow Memorial Award commemorates Alan’s work and the importance of water chemistry.
