When collision theory does not help explain observations
Two examples of where collision theory deos not help explain observations are discussed in the character conversation below.
[INS Coll_EU_07_cc]
You can read out more about the reaction between chlorine and hydrogen, which is often described as a light- catalysed reaction.
Why is this not the case?
In this case ultra violet radiation provides the energy to break bonds in the chlorine molecules. No third party reagent is used. If it were then it could be decribed as a catalytically controlled reaction.
A third example of a reaction which is not explained by collision theory is the explosive decomposition of nitrogen triiodide contact with feather.
When teaching about rates of reaction it is important to think through the explanations so that you are not caught out, like the teacher was in the character conversation at the top of this page. Watch out for other cases of when collison theroy does not help explain the experimental observations.
