Introduction

When demonstrating the effect of temperature on the rate of a reaction it is necessary to choose a good example.

One such experiment is the reaction known as the Iodine Clock. The combination of the reactants used gives a rapid colour change and the time for the completion of the reaction is then recorded.

It is important to note that this gives a time for the completion of the reaction and therefore gives us an indication of the overall rate. We are not measuring the progress of the reaction  over time, here.

The shorter the time for completion of the reaction the faster the average rate of reaction.

Rate is expressed as 1/t

In this section a significant amount of mathematical manipulation and thinking is required and so you are going to be directed to the RSC Maths Skills on-line CPD course.

Please follow this link and underake all the activities in the Developing Understanding section of the Using Algebra module. When you have finished this please come back to complete this section of the course.
